Med-Tech and Art

This week’s lecture was especially interesting to me because it was about how art is incorporated in medical technology and I truly believe that medicine is an art. It is intricate, detailed, and always perfect.
It was only until I started watching Grey’s Anatomy that I realized the artistic aspect of medicine. Dr. Derek Shepherd is a neurosurgeon and his perfectionist style makes him a great neurosurgeon. To perform difficult surgeries, doctors have to think outside the box and be very creative in their work.
In this week’s lecture, Professor Vesna states that doctors and artists consider the human body as art. We can alter our bodies and change them the way we want to. We don’t necessarily have to spend our whole lives in the bodies we are born in. For example, people who are unhappy with their facial features are able to fix their imperfections with plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery goes back over 4,000 years ago when soldiers needed face recreation for damages from war. Modern plastic surgery is used for enhanced nose shape, sharp jaw lines, and even eye enlargement.

  1. Hi Lydia,

When I read the prompt for this week's blog assignment, I wasn't really sure how art and medical technology collaborated. The first time I realized the artistic aspects of medicine was also from watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy. This episode in particular talked about how operating rooms used to be operating theaters. Doctors rehearse their surgeries, wear costumes (gloves and gowns), props (surgical instruments), etc. Doctors and artists consider the human body as art, and artists use many medical technologies to assist them with certain projects. Observation and an intimate understanding of the human body are key components of both medicine and art, and these two fields rely on each other to encompass both aspects.
